Scripture Setting: 1 Nephi 4; 2 Nephi 5; Alma 17; Ether 7
Long before it became a symbol of Nephite authority, the Sword of Laban belonged to one of the most powerful men in Jerusalem. It was a weapon forged with mastery—a blade of “precious steel,” rare for its time, strong enough to last through centuries of battles and generations of leaders.
The sword first appears on the darkest night of Nephi’s early journey, when he found Laban drunk in the streets. The Lord commanded Nephi to take the sword and the brass plates, beginning a legacy that would follow Nephi’s descendants for nearly a thousand years. The sword became more than a weapon—it became a reminder of deliverance, obedience, and the price of protecting sacred things.
Later prophets kept it as a symbol of rightful leadership. Kings and commanders swore covenants with it. Warriors carried it into battle. Even in the final days of the Nephites, the sword appears again, mentioned as a relic from a civilization that rose and fell by their faith.
Families reading the Book of Mormon can see how the sword isn’t just about war. It represents the idea that God strengthens those who stand for truth, even when the path is dangerous and uncertain.

In Rumors of War, the Sword of Laban carries this legacy forward. Drawing it gives players a sense of boldness—reminding them that real power comes when courage and righteousness work together.
