Scripture Setting: Book of Ether (Entire Record)
Long before Lehi fled Jerusalem, before Nephi built a ship, and before the Nephites and Lamanites ever existed, there lived another mighty people—the Jaredites. Their story is hidden near the end of the Book of Mormon, but in history it begins long before everything else. They came from the time of the Tower of Babel, when the world was confused and scattered.
The Jaredites were guided by a prophet named Jared and his brother, who cried to the Lord when their language was about to be changed. Because of their faith, God led them to a new land across the ocean—a promised land where they could build a nation. Their journey was long, their trials enormous, and their miracles unforgettable.
They built barges, crossed deep waters, carved kingdoms, fought wars, and saw miracles as great as any in scripture. Their record, written by the prophet Ether, teaches how pride destroys nations and how humility saves them.

For families reading together, the Jaredites open the Book of Mormon like a distant echo—one that prepares hearts for every prophet, king, and warrior who will come after.
In Rumors of War, the Jaredites set the stage: a reminder that every story has roots, and every people rise or fall by the choices of their hearts.
