Scripture Setting: 1 Nephi 3–5
When Lehi’s sons were commanded to obtain the brass plates, it wasn’t simply to retrieve a family record—it was to preserve truth. Those plates held genealogy, prophecies, commandments, and the words of ancient prophets. Without them, Lehi’s family would travel into the wilderness spiritually blind.
Nephi understood this. After the plates were finally obtained, he and his family searched the records, discovering stories of their ancestors, teachings they had forgotten, and warnings meant for their day. The scriptures strengthened them, corrected them, and prepared them for the challenges ahead. Even Laman and Lemuel, though reluctant, listened as Lehi read from the plates.
As the family read, the Spirit confirmed the truth of those writings. They learned that God had been guiding their ancestors for generations—and that He would guide them too. Their journey transformed from a desperate escape into a covenant destiny.
For families today, “search the records” becomes an invitation. When we open the scriptures—whether as parents, teens, or children—we start to see ourselves in the stories. We learn who we are, where we come from, and what God hopes we will become.

In Rumors of War, the Search the Records card represents insight. Drawing it gives players wisdom, reminding them that revelation often comes when we take time to seek the truths God has already given us.
