Bible Setting: 1 Samuel 9–31
Saul’s story begins when the Israelites asked God for a king. They wanted someone tall, brave, and strong who could lead them into battle. Saul seemed perfect for the job—he was taller than anyone else, handsome, and came from a respected family. When Samuel anointed him as king, Saul was humble and unsure of himself. He started his leadership with courage and kindness.
But as time went on, Saul began to change. Instead of trusting God, he started trusting in his own strength and opinions. When God told Saul to follow certain commands, Saul only obeyed halfway. He made excuses. He blamed others. He wanted to look good in front of people more than he wanted to obey God.
Because of this, God told Samuel that Saul’s kingdom would not last. Instead of turning back to God with a humble heart, Saul grew jealous—especially of young David, who became a hero among the people. Saul let jealousy, fear, and anger take over his heart, and it led him down a very sad path.
Saul teaches kids that obedience matters. God doesn’t just want big, impressive actions—He wants a heart that listens and follows Him fully. Saul also reminds us that jealousy can destroy joy, while humility helps us grow.
In The Good Fight card game, Saul represents the battle between pride and obedience. When kids play his card, they learn that true leadership comes from listening to God, doing what’s right, and keeping a soft and teachable heart.
