Bible Setting: 1 Samuel 1–10
Samuel’s story begins when he was just a little boy serving in the tabernacle under the priest Eli. His mother, Hannah, had prayed for a child and promised to dedicate him to God—and she kept that promise. Samuel grew up learning to help, listen, and obey.
One night, Samuel heard someone call his name. “Samuel!” He ran to Eli, thinking the old priest needed something. But Eli hadn’t called him. This happened again…and again. Finally, Eli understood what was happening and told Samuel, “If you hear the voice again, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.’”
So Samuel did. And for the first time in his life, God spoke directly to him. Samuel listened carefully, delivered God’s message bravely, and grew into a wise and trusted leader. As he became older, Samuel guided Israel, taught the people God’s laws, and eventually anointed both Saul and David to be kings. He was known as a prophet who walked closely with God.
Samuel teaches kids that God still speaks, and we can learn to listen—through prayer, scripture, and quiet moments of our hearts. He also shows that being young doesn’t mean you can’t be used by God. Samuel’s life reminds us that courage and obedience matter at every age.
In The Good Fight card game, Samuel represents wisdom and hearing God’s voice. When kids play his card, they learn that listening—really listening—to God and to good leaders gives them strength and direction for every challenge.
