Scripture Setting: 1 Nephi 2; 1 Nephi 16–18
The Book of Mormon doesn’t shy away from showing real human reactions—and one of the most familiar is murmuring. When Lehi led his family into the wilderness, not everyone handled the hardship with patience. Laman and Lemuel complained about leaving their home. Others grumbled when food was scarce or when the Liahona stopped working. Even Sariah, in a moment of fear, murmured when she thought her sons had been lost.
Murmuring wasn’t just complaining—it was choosing doubt over trust.
In the wilderness, every time the people murmured, their progress slowed. Their hearts closed. They lost sight of the miracles the Lord had already shown them. But when they humbled themselves and turned back to God, clarity returned. The Liahona worked again. Strength returned. Peace settled on the camp.
We murmur today for the same reasons they did—fear, frustration, uncertainty. But the story makes something clear: murmuring doesn’t solve the problem. Faith does.
For families reading together, these moments remind us that God is patient with our worries but invites us to rise above them.

In Rumors of War, the Murmur card represents the setbacks that happen when doubt takes over. Drawing it challenges players to choose trust over frustration—and to remember that even in hard moments, the Lord can guide anyone who turns their heart back to Him.
