JOSEPH — A Child of Promise in a New World

Scripture Setting: 2 Nephi 3

Joseph was one of the youngest sons in Lehi’s family—born not in Jerusalem, but in the wilderness. He never saw the city his parents left behind. He never felt the stone streets beneath his feet or heard the merchants shouting in the markets. His entire world was tents, travel, and the words of a father who carried ancient visions in his heart.

Because he was born during the family's hardest years, Joseph’s arrival must have brought a sense of hope—proof that God had not forgotten them. Lehi loved this son deeply and gave him a special blessing before he died. In that blessing, Lehi spoke of another Joseph, the son of Israel, and prophesied that mighty prophets and seers would come from Joseph’s lineage in the last days.

Imagine being a boy and hearing that God had a future prepared for your family long before you were born. Joseph grew up knowing he was part of a covenant stretching back generations—a chain of promises connected to prophets, records, and the Restoration that would come centuries later.

For families today, Joseph’s story reminds us that God sees every child, even the quiet ones, and that every generation has a role to play in His work.
