Bible Setting: Joel 1–3
Joel lived during a time when something terrible happened to the land of Judah—a massive swarm of locusts swept through the fields, eating everything in sight. The crops were gone, the animals had nothing to eat, and the people were frightened. It felt like the whole world was falling apart. God sent Joel to help the people understand what was happening and to call them back to Him.
Joel told the people that the disaster was a wake-up call. They had forgotten God, and now they needed to return to Him with all their hearts. He encouraged them not just to tear their clothes in sadness, but to “rend their hearts”—which meant to be truly sorry and ready to change.
But Joel’s message wasn’t only about warning. It was also filled with great hope. God promised that if the people returned to Him, He would restore what had been lost.
He said,
“I will restore the years the locusts have eaten.”
God also promised something even bigger—that one day His Spirit would be poured out on all people. Sons and daughters would prophesy. Old and young would dream dreams and see visions. This promise began to come true in the New Testament on the day of Pentecost.
Joel teaches kids that God can rebuild what feels broken. Even when life looks empty or damaged, God can bring new hope, new joy, and new beginnings. Joel helps us remember that returning to God brings healing and blessing.
Joel represents restoration, repentance, and the promise of God’s Spirit. When kids hear his words, they learn that God brings new life even after hard times.
