Bible Setting: Numbers 22–24
Balaam was a prophet who lived near the land of Moab during the time the Israelites were traveling to the Promised Land. Even though Balaam knew about the true God, his heart was often pulled toward money, rewards, and pleasing powerful people.
One day, King Balak of Moab became afraid when he saw the Israelites camped nearby. Instead of seeking peace, Balak wanted Balaam to curse God’s people.
Balak promised Balaam riches and honor if he would do it. Balaam knew God had blessed the Israelites, but he wanted the rewards Balak offered. God warned him not to go, but after Balaam asked again—hoping for a different answer—God allowed him to travel but told him to speak only the truth.
On the journey, Balaam’s donkey suddenly stopped in the road. She saw an angel blocking the way, but Balaam didn’t. He grew angry and hit the donkey. Then something amazing happened—God opened the donkey’s mouth, and she spoke! Only then did Balaam see the angel and realize he had been acting foolishly.
When Balaam finally reached King Balak, he tried to curse Israel, but God wouldn’t let him. Every time Balaam opened his mouth, blessings came out instead of curses. Still, Balaam’s greedy heart caused trouble later when he encouraged the Moabites to lead Israel into sin.
Balaam teaches kids that knowing the right thing isn’t enough—you must choose it. His story reminds us that greed and stubbornness can lead us down dangerous paths, but listening to God brings protection and blessing.
Balaam represents temptation, greed, and the danger of divided loyalty. When kids hear his story, they learn that choosing God’s way—no matter the reward offered—brings true victory.
